Diaphragm valves get their tag from a simple disc that connects with a seat at the top of the valve body to make a seal. Diaphragm valves are connected to trace valves but use an elastomeric diaphragm, somewhat of an elastomeric liner in the valve body, to divide the flow stream from the closure.

Diaphragm valves can be manual or automatic. Automatic diaphragm valves may use pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric actuators and accessories such as solenoid valves, limit switches, and positioners.
